NOW THE RULES & SCORING...

SCORING...
A scoring element is called a fan, pronounced "faan". Sometimes the word "double" is used, but that can be misleading.

A hand which is merely complete is scored at 0 fan.
If a hand contains 4 Chows, 1 extra fan is given.
If a hand contains 4 Pongs (and/or Kongs), 3 extra fan.
If the winning tile is picked up fresh (not a discard), 1 fan.
If there are 1 or 2 Dragon Pongs (or Kongs), 1 fan each.
Two Dragon Pongs and a Pair of the other Dragon, 4 fan.
All three Dragon Pongs is 6 fan extra.
Pongs/Kongs of Winds matching the Round or Seat, 1 fan.
No Flowers, 1 fan.
Flowers that match the Seat value, 1 fan each.
All four Red Flowers or Blue Flowers, 1 fan more.

PURITY...
A hand which has tiles from only one of the regular suits (Characters, Sticks, Balls) with the rest being Winds and/or Dragons is Semi-Pure, 3 extra fan. If all the tiles
are from one suit, the hand is Pure, 6 extra fans. In addition, a hand which has nothing but Winds and Dragons is 7 extra fan.

GOING OUT...
Whenever you make a Kong, you always pick up a fresh tile to even out your hand. If that tile causes you to win, you will get 1 fan for Self-Pick plus a 1 fan bonus. For Robbing A Kong you will get a 1 fan bonus.

Finally, there are the following SPECIAL HANDS:

THIRTEEN UNIQUE WONDERS (Sup Saam Yiu)
13 Unique Wonders
A One and a Nine from each suit plus one of each Wind and Dragon. Match any one of these for a Pair. MAXIMUM HAND.

ONES & NINES PONGS

Four Pongs or Kongs plus a Pair, all must be Ones or Nines from the three ordinal suits. MAXIMUM HAND.

ALL KONGS

Any four Kongs plus any Pair. MAXIMUM HAND.

HIDDEN TREASURE

Must have any four Pongs, any Pair, all concealed, and win by Self-Pick. MAXIMUM HAND.

GATES OF HEAVEN

You must be holding these exact tiles (in any one suit):
1 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 9 9
Any tile of that suit that comes along will make your hand complete. Look at all the ways these tiles can be grouped into different sets! Try it with a 1, then with a 4 or 5, etc. Any tile of that suit wins! MAXIMUM HAND

SEVEN PAIRS (optional)

Seven Pairs of any tiles - 4 fan.

JADE DRAGON (optional)

Hand must have Pongs (or Kongs) of STICKS only and Pong of GREEN DRAGON. MAXIMUM HAND.

RUBY DRAGON (optional)

Hand must have Pongs (or Kongs) of CHARACTERS only and Pong of RED DRAGON. MAXIMUM HAND.

PEARL DRAGON (optional)

Hand must have Pongs (or Kongs) of BALLS only and Pong of WHITE DRAGON. MAXIMUM HAND.

TIERED PAYMENT
Less than 4 fan pays you 1, 2, 4, or 8 chips from each opponent, double from the one who threw the "waiting" tile or double from all on a Self-Pick. Four or more fan is 16 or 32. Over 6 fan, double again. Over 9 fan, double again. Maximum hand is 128 chips.

4, 5, or 6 fan is called a FULL HOUSE.
7, 8, or 9 fan is called DOUBLE FULL HOUSE.
10 fan or more is called TRIPLE FULL HOUSE.

NINE PIECES PENALTY...
If any of the other players has 3 sets of one suit showing, a warning will appear to remind you of the following rules:

If you throw a tile of the same suit, and it causes them to win, and their hand is Pure, you must pay for everyone. This will amount to 64, 128, or 256 chips!!!

If you throw a tile that causes a player to have 12 pieces of the same suit revealed, and that player then picks up the winning tile, and their hand is Pure, you must pay for everyone. This will amount to 192 or 384 chips!!!

This is where Mahjong really becomes a game of defense.

OPTIONS

There are certain rules that you and your opponents might decide on at the beginning of each session.

MINIMUM HAND...
Minimum Hand is one of these. A mahjong hand can be complete but not worth any extra fan. This is known as a "chicken hand".

At the beginning of the game you will choose your opponents, and you will have to choose the number of fan (1, 2, or 3) required to win each hand. This means that you will have to have 1 or more Flower points, Dragon Pongs, or something else
of value; otherwise you cannot win.

MAXIMUM PENALTY...
One of the other choices is 'Maximum Penalty', mahjong's ultimate penalty: if you wrongly declare you've won, the hand ends and you must pay 128 chips to each opponent!

FIFTH TILE PENALTY...

This is another rule that goes hand-in-hand with Maximum Penalty. Beginners concentrate on making a complete hand so that they can win something. EXPERTS KNOW THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO PREVENT OTHERS FROM WINNING. This often requires destroying your hand by throwing the least risky tile, especially late in the hand. Keep your eye on the Wall. When there are only a few tiles to go, do not throw tiles that are the same suit as an opponent's revealed tiles, and do not throw tiles that have not yet been thrown by anyone. If there are less than five tiles in the Wall, and you throw a tile not yet seen, and someone claims it to Win, you will pay for everyone!
